How To Make Chocolate Oatmeal

My daughter and I love oatmeal, especially in the winter. She really enjoys it when it's chocolate oatmeal! Here are 3 ways I have made it:

1. Use chocolate milk instead of white milk to "cook" the oatmeal.

2. Add milk and chocolate syrup to uncooked oats, then "cook."

3. Add milk, 1 tablespoon of powder cocoa, and 2 1/2 tablespoons of sugar substitute to uncooked oats, then "cook." (adjust measurement to suit your taste.)

It's pretty tasty. If you try it, let me know what you think. Any other ways to spruce up oatmeal?

Spring is already showing its colors! I've pulled some weeds, but I'm looking forward to planting summer flowers. I would say the best place to be for buying flowers, plants, and any other yard ornament is the 25th Annual Louisiana Nursery Festival this weekend (3/19/10-3/21/10) in Forest Hill. According to the website, they will have wind chimes, birdhouses, swings, yard art, and many other items for the garden. Shrubs and trees of all types will also be available. Bring the kiddos because they will love the carnival rides! What a great way to spring into.....spring!

In the original post, I mentioned a great deal Vistaprint was having on their invitations. There were many cute invitations to choose from, but I was looking for a sweet, pink cupcake theme. I was torn between grabbing a good deal or going with the design I had in my head. I chose to pass on deal #1 and find another one. Here are the two deals I considered:

Walmart- Offers photo cards to use as invitations. They have pre-designed photo cards as low as $.34 per 4x8 card or $.64 per 5x7 card. Use "site to store" to avoid paying shipping. One hour photos will be slightly higher.

SeeHere- With promo code "newbaby," you can get 50 free photo cards. This code works on 4x8 and 5x7 cards. Shipping depends on how many you order. Shipping for 1-24 is $2.49 and 25-50 is $4.99. This site offers a basic design feature allowing you to customize the card to your liking. You can change text, add pictures, move pictures, and add graphics.

The fourth book in our Dr. Seuss week was One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. There are many unique characters in this book, but we focused on something recognizable--the fish.

We started off with a matching game. I found magazine ads with distinct colors and/or patterns, cut out one basic fish shape per ad, and cut the fish in half seperating the head from the tail. We mixed up all the tails and heads then my daughter matched the two.

On the menu for lunch was a ham fishwich followed by fish Jigglers after nap. (Jiggler recipe) We ended the day with a trip to the lake for a little...........fishing. Any other ideas for Dr. Seuss activities?

We played Musical Squares using rhyming words from the book. For lunch, we ate green eggs, a must for Green Eggs Day. My daugther loves wraps so I rolled the green eggs and ham in a tortilla. Tomorrow, March 2nd, is Dr. Seuss' birthday. To celebrate, I have a week full of tricks based on his fun books. Today was centered around The Cat in the Hat. This book was fitting for today because we felt like the two kids stuck inside "all [this] cold, cold wet day." Our tricks were:

1. Making a hat out of a cardboard oatmeal container and a paper plate.

2. Balancing the hat on our heads.

3. Playing "cat, cat, hat." (a.ka. duck, duck, goose)

4. Checking out the games at Seussville.

5. Working on "at" words. (Hat printable here.)

6. Turning a jelly sandwich into a hat.

Cookie of the Month Club: Quick Cookie

My grandma is known for her Quick Cookie. This is her go-to recipe when she wants to share a dessert with others. Not only is it easy (quick), but also delicious!

1 box yellow cake mix
1 cup brown sugar
1 stick of butter (melted)
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup chopped pecans, with extra for topping
1/2 cup chocolate chips, with extra for topping

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients, except eggs. Beat eggs then add to previous mixture. Stir, but don't over-mix. (This is the trick with this recipe so the dish isn't gooey.) Pour into greased 9x13 pan. Top with extra chocolate chips and chopped pecans. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Umm, c'est bon!

Hard to believe...the baby will be 1 year in April! I have two months to put together a great party on a tight budget. My first step was to decide on a location. We decided on having the party at a great park. The park has playground equipment, covered picnic pavillions, lots of room to run, plenty of parking, and ducks (to feed). All of this will be FREE! We just need the weather to cooperate.

For invitations, I came across a great deal at Vistaprint. Currently, you can order 10 invitations for FREE! Shipping will cost approximately $4.50 (depending on size of the card) which comes out to $.45 per card. Keep in mind, white envelopes are free with the order and color coordinated envelopes are a few dollars extra. Since I most likely will need more than 10 invites, I will place 2 orders. What a great deal!

Thanks to No Time For Flash Cards, my daugther and I found a fun game we call "Musical Squares." We used square pieces of card stock, but any shape can be used. Write funny and/or educational tasks on the card then put the cards in a big circle. The DJ starts the music while the player goes around the circle stepping on each card. When the music stops, the player completes the task on the card. No Time For Flash Cards has great step-by-step instructions, including a video. I was the player one round, and my daughter loved seeing me complete a front roll. Boy, I'm not as young as I used to be.

When I woke up this morning, I thought I was in Colorado! We received 5 inches of snow over night! How beautiful! I still can't believe it when I look out the window. We don't have the proper snow attire, but that didn't keep us inside. I tried sledding down the hill in our yard. Instead of sliding down the hill, I just stayed there...sunken in the snow. I guess it needs to be packed to go sledding. We made a Mardi Gras snowman with beads and a mask. All he needed was a "Throw me somethin' mister!" sign. What a memorable week for us in Louisiana!

We have a puppet theater, but it has gone untouched for a while. (Check out this post on how to set up your own puppet theater.) Part of the problem is that I like to have a story or script in mind before starting the show. Well, my daugther asked for a puppet show this week, and I didn't have an original story in mind. I improvised with a story that turned out ok. Most of our puppets are farm animals so that's what I used, but any puppet will work.

(Horse is grazing in a field and Cow approaches.)

Cow (in sad tone): Hi Henry Horse.

Horse: Hey Bessie Cow. How's it goin'?

Cow: Well, Henry Horse, I'm hungry. Could I have some of this grass?

Horse: Sorry Bessie Cow, but this grass is for me. I haven't eaten all night!

(Cow moves on to the barn and finds Pig.)

Cow (in sad tone): Hey Patricia Pig. I'm hungry. Could I have some of your corn?
